Cislunar
December 2094. An asteroid core carrying a mineral that could make every reactor on Earth obsolete is being towed to the far side of the Moon. Then its tug fires when it shouldn’t, and the core falls on a lunar mining town. Commander Elias Thorne’s job is to know where everything between the Earth and the Moon is. That night, his sensors were blind.
“The cutter Vera Rubin was falling toward the Moon, which was what it always did, and so did everything else up here.”
The High Seas
Past the Worden Line, orbits stop being simple and the space between the Earth and the Moon becomes a sea with lanes, chokepoints and ports. Tap a number to look closer.
The Missing Minutes
The catalog tracks forty-one thousand eight hundred and eighty-seven objects, every second. At 03:47 on 10 December 2094, it stopped writing.
OF THE EARTH-MOON SYSTEM
(“THE L1 ACCORDS”) · 2079
9.1. Any natural body, fragment, or payload that departs a registered trajectory through no act of the charter-holder, and comes to rest upon the lunar surface, shall be deemed salvage.
9.2. Salvage upon the lunar surface vests in the holder of the surface charter within whose bounds it comes to rest, subject to a recovery levy of eleven percent (11%) payable to the Commission.
The Cast
One family across six years and five theaters: the cities of Earth, the deep, the Moon, the lanes between, and the habitats at the Lagrange points.
Cdr. Elias Thorne
His job is to know where everything is. On the night it mattered most, someone had blinded his sensors from the inside.
Ens. Julian Thorne
His son. Twenty-four, nineteen months a pilot, and he had never once flown the ship in anger. He was overhead when it hit.
Dr. Mara Thorne
His daughter. She helps keep a living city of grown towers alive, and still goes out at dusk to meet the night crews.
Lola Quispe
Her grandfather worked the tin mines in Bolivia, and his grandfather before him. Standing at the fence around the new crater, she thought: not this time.
Celestine Vance
Every morning she swims across a lake and looks up at the people on the other side of the world, hanging over her head.
Seven parts. Six years. One family.
